What is Wealth Coaching?

Rather than being told exactly what to do with their money, many of our clients prefer to employ us as their "coach" or "guide", to empower them to make their own decisions.

Less than 20% of Australians currently use a financial adviser, and that's mostly made up of retirees and people over 55. Most young Australians think they don't have enough money to get financial advice, or fear that a adviser will only sell them a commission-based product they don't need.

IMPORTANT: "Coaching" is not "Advice"

As your coach, we don't tell you what to do - we guide you through a well-designed process to help you make great decisions for yourself. We'll help you understand your options, clarify your preferences, and identify pros and cons, but we won't recommend any specific products.

What is Financial Advice?

Some parts of your finances are sufficiently complex, or you might just feel so time-poor, that you would prefer us to just tell you exactly what best to do and to help you do it. In these cases we can provide formal "Financial Advice".

Financial advice is a regulated service

In Australia there are strict rules about what counts as financial advice, who can give it and how it has to be given. The recent Royal Commission into Banking and Financial Services has made it clear that the financial advice industry still has many issues to address in how we give advice. Our approach at Purpose Advisory is to set up our own strict compliance procedures to make sure that you as the client are fully informed about how we develop your advice. We also make sure we are not incentivised to recommend anything other than what is in your best interest. That is why we choose not to take commissions from referral partners or product providers.

About Our Advice

What investments can you advise on?

We're open to discuss any financial opportunity you come across, and we'll help you assess it on it's merits. Additionally, we're licensed to provide formal recommendations on most structured investment products. The common investments our clients are interested in include robo-advice products, direct shares, ETFs, managed funds, bonds, peer-to-peer lending, term deposits, cash, business opportunities and of course, property.

Any financial recommendations we give are approved by our licensee, Apex Macro Financial Group. Apex Macro Financial Group keeps an "Approved Product Listing" (APL) of financial products which we can be confident to recommend at any time. If we provide advice on a product outside of this list, we are responsible for carrying our appropriate due diligence to Apex Macro Financial Group's satisfaction.

Will you tell me exactly what to invest in?

Yes, we can. Some of our clients want us to tell them exactly where and how to invest their money. Others use us more as a sounding board for their decisions. Either way, we don't take commissions from any specific recommendations or referrals we make.

Our financial recommendations will be outlined for you in a detailed Statement of Advice (SOA) document. If and when you agree to our recommendations, we'll assist you to implement and changes required, both initially and ongoing, if desired.

Do you help with Superannuation & Personal Insurance?

Yes. Along with your personal and short term goals, we guide you to consider and plan for your long term wealth creation (super) and personal insurances (risk management). Any recommendations we provide relating to your super or insurances will form part of our Statement of Advice (SOA) document we provide to you.

Where do you get your investment research from?

Our financial product research is based on our own personal investment experience, the advice & experience of investing experts who we follow and the investment product recommendations of various Australian research houses, including Morningstar and Lonsec. Anything investment which Lonsec classes as “Recommended” or better is immediately included in our Approved Product List (APL). For products not on this list, we draw from a range of other sources, including Morningstar, ASIC, APRA and our various professional partners.

What is Purpose Advisory's investment philosophy?

We lean a well-devised set of principles which underpin all of our investment advice. We believe the following:

  • Purpose - The primary purpose of investing is to create value in the world
  • Education - Everyone is responsible for being adequately educated about what they invest in
  • Planning - Everyone should have their own personalised investment strategy before they begin investing
  • Values - Our investments should serve our values, our mission and our ideal lifestyle, not the other way around
  • Ethical Investing - Everyone has an ethical view and should aim to express this through their investments
  • Good Assets - The key to successful investing is to collect and manage “good assets”. These are things which produce a positive income for you, which grow over time and provide value for the world
  • Good Debt - Although debt can be dangerous, it's possible to use debt in a healthy and responsible way for creating wealth, especially if you use this debt to purchase or fund good assets
  • Risk - All investments involve risk. Managing risk requires maximising the probability of achieving your desired outcome and planning for contingencies in the event this is not achieved
  • Savings - A regular savings plan is the life blood of any investment strategy
  • Emergency Funds - No one should seriously consider investing before they've created an adequate emergency fund to provide for worst-case scenarios.
  • Property - Owning direct property is a cornerstone, but not the only important foundation for long term wealth creation
  • "Outsourced" Investments - As soon as you have enough money in your emergency fund you should be contributing to an outsourced investments which is easy to manage, well-diversified and incurs minimal fees
  • "Hands-On" Investments - Everyone should work towards creating one or more investments which they actively manage, using their strengths, relationships and passions to create wealth (e.g. building a business, share portfolio or a property development)
  • Dollar Cost Averaging - The most simple way to begin investing is to select great long term assets and make a series of regular purchases at regular intervals to spread the risk of when to buy in, and to create a discipline of regular investing.
  • Index funds - Index funds are a simple, low cost and reasonably consistent long term investment solution, and a great place to start when investing
  • Active funds - It is possible for certain active fund managers to outperform the index over the long term, however it can be challenging to select these funds
  • Business - Building a successful business that addresses an important societal need is often the most rewarding way to build wealth
  • Trading - Trading markets is a viable way for a select few number of people to make money. However it's useful for every investor to learn the fundamentals of analysing an asset, and of technical chart analysis to improve their overall investment performance.
